Head of Legal Services

We are currentrly recruiting for a Head of Legal Services based in Greater Manchester. 

Pay rate: TBC PAYE / £500 umbrella – per day (paid weekly)

Hours: Full time (37 hrs per week)

Contract duration: Temporary ongoing

Purpose:

• To Deputise for the Council Solicitor and Monitoring Officer, in his/her absence.
• To lead, develop and manage a team of professionally qualified and support staff providing high quality legal services to the Council, partners and stakeholders, Including Six Town Housing and other outside organisations with whom Legal Services has a contractual arrangement, taking responsibility for its organisation, administration, strategic and financial development and management.
• To provide and ensure the provision of sound legal advice, assistance and representation, to Elected Members, Departments of the Council and other partners and stakeholders which will impact on the decisions and Initiatives undertaken by them, together with the provision of advocacy when required.

Essential criteria:

• Barrister or Solicitor with significant post qualification experience
• Experience of continuing development of management and professional skills
• Substantial knowledge and experience of the law governing the practice of local government
• Experience of advising elected members and senior officers on constitutional or complex legal matters
• Substantial knowledge of at least four areas of local authority law and practice
• Extensive knowledge and experience of dealing with legal and governance issues within a local authority
• Substantial experience of working within legal practice as a lawyer
• Substantial experience of working at a senior level in a political challenging or similar environment
• Substantial experience of at least four areas of local authority law and practice
• Substantial and proven management skills, including financial management skills and the development and motivation of staff
• Highly developed oral and written communication skills including experience of undertaking advocacy and making presentations to a varied audience
• Experience of advising elected members and senior officers on constitutional or complex legal matters
